A Little Bit About Budwig’s History

A Little Bit About Budwig’s History

Budwig’s history traces back to early 21st century aeronautics. Company founder Gilbert G. Budwig had an extensive tenure working in aviation as Chief Instructor at the Stinson School of Flying (training pilots for the First World War), as well as jobs in passenger transport, aerial advertising, and even a brief stint as an airmail pilot. While he was Director of Air Regulation at the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC), Gilbert contributed to the Scheduled Air Transport Rating. Notably, Bud worked on early versions of Lockheed aircraft. Before legally changing his last name to “Lockheed” in 1934, aviation expert Allan Loughead was working on a sport bi-plane in 1920 called the Model S-1; the pilot he chose to test drive this aircraft was our very own Gilbert Budwig. While only one of these models was made, the S-1 influenced future Lockheed designs in the succeeding decades.

Bud’s career took him all over the United States. The earliest versions of the company date to 1933, when Gilbert left the DOC and formed Budwig Manufacturing Company in order to make horticultural equipment. In 1960, Bud filed patents for a liquid mixing and spraying device as well as a grommet—the basis for the molded rubber feet we synthesize today. Our earliest surviving sales records are dated in 1965, which we use to identify as the company’s official nascence; however it’s completely possible that the current incarnation of Budwig Company could have started as early as 1955, to keep Bud busy the year he applied for military benefits.
